Normally, I wouldn't bore you folks with a race report; but this one was pretty special...
Start was postponed an hour since there was no wind. When they finally started, the wind picked up from zero to about 20 or more while the monos were starting. When we started, as we got to the committee boat, they hailed us..."this isn't your start, this is your warning gun!!!" Now, since I had just had a really good start, this PO'd me a little. BUT now we mill about another 5 minutes and start, not as good, but OK...
I have this big cat right next to me and upwind. So I head up a little and call out, "windward boat keep clear". This pisses the guy off and he calls out, "Give Me a Break". I search through the rule book but can't find that particular hail.... Anyway, I pinch him off and make him pass below.
Well, I missed the upwind turning mark. I was looking for a GREEEN bouy since the sailing instructions called it Mark 7, well it turns out that Mark 7 is really Bouy 2 on the charts. So, I have to go back and circle the damn thing. By this time I 'm WAAAY behind. But nobody in front of me is flying spin. SO "What the hell!?"
We hoist and for 20 minutes never saw the speedo go below 17. It was FUN (top speed I saw on the speedo was 21.3, but then I lost helm (ventilating)).
I caught up to most. Then it got really light (I mean REALLY LIGHT, ). So we gybed and kept it hot. Even dropped the spin and went with jib and main for a while (and that worked well for a while)... Then we wanted to stay out of the current but keep it hot...about a gybe a minute), for a while. Won't bore you with the details, but was a lot of work, but also a lot of fun. I thought for a while I had left Pete (other F242 in the race) in the dust, but when we were about 6 miles from the finish, THERE he was in FRONT of me...
Gybe, Gybe , Gybe, Gybe, ...Didn't know what the current was doing (hadn't planned on being out there so long....) Pete got hung up behind some monos (big spins cast big shadows).
Was a close finish for a 30 mile race...AND (did I say this before) A LOT OF FUN!!!
