Report on the 2003 Jazz Cup

After a long cold wait Freedom and we were off chasing the
F-24 ODC, nice to have fast rabbits. I looked back to see Donnybrook
starting a little late but not too late.
We managed to catch all the F-24s by the weather mark and popped the spinn, Triple X hung in there till we got things sorted out then we were off. Got to Red Rock really fast, no wind shadow from Angle Island for a change went around west side of Red Rock, probably a mistake but trying to stay in the wind. Under the San Rafael Bridge was torture, first time we had to slow down, getting spoiled with this great wind already (this can't be the Jazz Cup). By the time we pass the Brothers we are really moving again averaging 14 knots and going through the fleet of leaners like an obstacle course. Meanwhile Freedom has done a horizon job on us, I guess that -99 is for real, don't see any other multihulls (where is Donnybrook). Gybe three times between San Rafael Bridge and Benicia Bridge, almost maxed out on the fun meter (this can't be the Jazz Cup). Lots of gybing and ducking in the Carquinez Strait, almost missed light #25, having to much fun, caught one of those Carquinez gusts hit a wave and stuffed the bows up to the mast, I think the kayakers call it a "popup", definitely maxed out on the fun meter now. Get the spinn down and get around the lee marks, pretty uneventful last half mile. Donnybrook snuck up behind and got us by 14 seconds corrected time, that popup was pretty costly. All in all one of the best sailing day I have had yet and even the timing was accurate and posted right after the race (this can't be the Jazz Cup), but it was.
