OK, the Cruising Cat division reports a good time was had by all. Mood
Indigo and crew gathered in Alameda over coffee and pastries, basking in
the sun and light Southerly breeze, debating wearing shorts or long pants,
and motored out the estuary. As we reached TI and saw the fog covering
Angel Island, another layer of clothes all around. When we saw the boats
heeled in the slot, in went the first reef. We went off in search of a
Committee boat and tried to remember what everyone needs to do in a race.
As the windspeed climbed to 25, we decided to wrap up part of the genoa,
and put on more layers. The brave souls in the Committee Boat, an open
Boston Whaler from EYC, set a line and started the sequence, with gusts
into the low 30's, a big ebb, and lumpy conditions. The whole multihull
fleet tried to stay out of the way until our turn. Only Double Play and
Mood Indigo came out to play in our division. I was just as glad we had
planned non-spinnaker, as I'm not sure we could have flown one in these
conditions. One-design racing is great!! Don and I traded the lead
several times, with a great reach/run/surfing contest neck and neck from R2
to the corner of TI. The advantage of 4 crew to help pull strings was
finally too much, and Mood Indigo nosed ahead at the finish.
On the return down the estuary, the winds again were light. One
resourceful pair in an inflatable kayak were sailing back down from the APL
dock with two umbrellas as a sail and a kayak paddle rudder. At least this
time I had remembered my camera.
My thanks to the RC for braving the conditions, and to all the other boats
for coming out. It was a great start to the season. For any of you not
yet signed up, there is still time!! The series coninues with one race a
month. How about some of you Seawind owners? The Cruising Cat division
has room for more boats.
