Race Committee Notes

M.L. Higgins, Alameda Yacht Club, Primary Race Officer (PRO) lead the team. We reset the starting line once and still had time to shoot the first gun at 12:15. Ebb at the start caused the stern to slip upwind, requiring a reset of the Orang Flag for the starting line, pulling flag poles around, ...

Bob Rose hosted the Race Committee on the 48' DeFever powerboat. The skipper and his wife Theresa provided marvelous hospitality and entertainment. Theresa urged Bob to set a fishing line. The skipper caught a shark. The shark was returned to the bay. However, if we caught another it might have been kept aboard. Earlier I asked "where do you put a fish to clean it on the boat", which seemed more much important after the shark took the bait and came to the surface thrashing around.

No OCS boats for any fleet. Ebb tide was apparent and pushing the boats up towards the starting line, making most cautious. Shifting winds of 5-10 degrees favored one end or another for different starts. One (1) DNF was recorded by VHF radio for an Encinal YC entry.

Multihull Fleet :

  • Prior to the start there appeared to be a close call between "Mood Indigo" and "Triple Play". Unsure if contact was made, no flags seen/recorded at the finish (thank you).
  • "Origami" started on port tack & crossed the fleet, pictures in BAMA foto gallery. Origami roundings: 3rd around 1st weather mark, 1st around Mark 35 the bottom of the triangle / leeward mark.
  • Close call on port-starboard with Three Sigma and Wingit on first weather leg, almost a collision.
  • "Vingt-deux Franc Posse" (hereinafter Two Sigma) was in the vicinity of, and crossed the starting line at approximately 13:18, estimated at 28 minutes after the Multihull Fleet start at 12:50. RC had no course flag displayed. The PRO hailed "Two Sigma" on VHF channel 71 multiple times to communicate. Race Committee received no response from "Two Sigma". PRO gave the Recorder an option of DNC vs. DNS for "Two Sigma". DNS was originally scored and later changed to the TwoSigma self-recorded finish time of 15:37. Race Committee had left the finish line station assuming all "racing boats" had finished.
