Memorial Day
weekend at Angel Island – Ayala Cove is upon us. From emails and KaBoom discussions, I think those planning
on being there are - Perception, Jitterbug, Double Play, Devoras, Joint Venture,
+ ?. Perception and Double Play
plan to grab some moorings on Friday (that's tomorrow).
Party
night on Saturday night? BBQ on
the beach after the day use folks depart? “Trading places” day sails on the cats and tris.

Weekend
I
will go over early on Friday to get a good spot hopefully a mooring between two buoys one closest to the beach and the other
just north (further out) of the first.
If we could get a second spot just west of the first, we would have it
made. I can try to set out lines
and fenders to reserve a second spot.
I expect we can raft off quite a few boats to Perception, I would say a
cat on each side and a tri outside on each side. We could also put a raftup
between the buoy closest to shore and the shore with an anchor, or anchors, on
the beach to hold the raftup.
Maybe 3 or 4 more boats this way.
If we can get a second set of moorings on the next row, close to the
beach, we can get lots of boats together.
I agree with Don Parker that you can always find a spot at Ayala
Cove. I think we could pack in
quite a few boats. Remember that
you can also go to the docks early in the AM and take the end ties before others
get there.
I
have enjoyed a BBQ on the Island after the last ferry leaves (4:30 PM, I
think). There are virtually no
people, the deer and raccoons appear and you have the whole area to yourself
until dusk, when the park closes and you go back to the boats.
I
have also anchored off the back side in China Cove and agree that it is rollier. It is a nice spot if you get close to
shore. I believe there are some
pilings that could be used along with an anchor to keep you head to most of the
waves. Ayala Cove is a better
choice and I think we can get everyone in that wants to come over.

Weekend
I have moored or rafted to moored
boats many, many times in Ayala Cove with very limited rolling or problems
after nightfall (or at least decent enough for a good night's sleep).
Yes, the rare Southbound transiting large ship from the upper bay or Chevron
Long Whaf can cause a few rollers, but usually only to those moorings way on
the outer west side and it is a rarity after nightfall.
On the other hand, the Angel Island back
side either China Cove (also known as Winslow Cove) or off of Fort McDowell
where there used to be mooring bouys attached to engine blocks (now
gone) are both much rollier anchorages at all times and I do not
recommend either for a peaceful night's sleep.
Yes, more than one multihull would have to
get to Ayala Cove on Friday and take (as everyone does) aft and fore moorings
in a few different locations to get enough room for raft ups for the rest of us
9 - 5, M-F crowd, but if we bribe such persons with food, liquor or (as
required) even that most demanded item, FUEL (gosh, this used to be viewage of
a nude, female, body part, my how times change), this should not be a
problem.
Suggestions for other anchor outs
(someday) or for solo adventurers (stolen unabashedly and enjoyed the same from
Carolyn & Bob Mehaffy's "Cruising Guide to San Francisco
Bay":
Horseshoe Bay (immediate North of GG
Bridge)(last known controlled by Presidio Yacht club (415) 332-2319)
Aquatic Park: Is supposed to require entry
only under sail (but I have gone in under power may times. The
restriction is to ensure that you are aware of swimmers in the water at the
shore.) Also requires fore and aft anchoring due to strong current and
would not rely on a raft-up without each boat having an anchor due to same.
Anchoring is usually required at the western side of Aquatic Park. Also,
anchoring of more than 24 hours requires permission from the State Park Ranger
(easily obtained) at (415) 556-1238.
